Every feeding bottle, sippy cup, and silicone weaning set arrives from the factory with the same reassuring phrases printed somewhere on the packaging: food-grade, BPA-free, safe for babies. None of those phrases are a certificate. None of them are backed by a lab report unless someone specifically asked for one — and on a category where the product spends hours a day in a baby’s mouth, that gap is the single riskiest thing a seller can inherit without knowing it.
We covered this problem for kitchenware a few weeks ago. Feeding products raise the stakes further, because the regulatory concern isn’t just “is this material generally food-safe” — it’s specifically what leaches out of the plastic or silicone when it’s heated, sterilized, and reused, day after day, for a product used exclusively by infants.
Why Feeding Products Sit in Their Own Risk Category
Baby bottles, sippy cups, and weaning sets are food contact articles, which puts them under Saudi Arabia’s SFDA (Saudi Food and Drug Authority) and SASO conformity requirements the same way food packaging is regulated — but the use case is harsher than ordinary food packaging. These products get:
- Heated repeatedly — sterilized in boiling water or steam sterilizers, sometimes daily
- Microwaved in the case of some bottle warmers and silicone sets
- Reused for months, not discarded after a single use like most food packaging
- Put in direct, prolonged contact with an infant’s mouth, not just food that’s eaten and gone
Each of those conditions increases how much of a material’s chemical makeup can migrate into what the baby actually consumes. That’s why regulators and testing labs treat migration testing — measuring what actually transfers out of the material under realistic conditions — as the real test that matters, not a generic “food-grade” material declaration.
Where “BPA-Free” Claims Fall Apart
BPA-free has become such a standard label claim that it’s almost meaningless without paperwork behind it. A few things sellers consistently get wrong:
“BPA-free” doesn’t mean “migration-tested.” A factory can accurately state a plastic contains no BPA and still have never tested what else migrates out of it — including BPA substitutes (like BPS or BPF) that research has shown can leach at similar or even higher rates in some conditions, depending on the material and simulant used.
Silicone isn’t automatically safer. Silicone weaning sets and teethers are marketed as the “safe alternative” to plastic, but food-grade silicone still needs its own conformity testing — a silicone claim on a spec sheet is not a substitute for a lab report.
The report needs to match the actual product, not the raw material. A resin supplier’s compliance certificate for the base plastic doesn’t cover what happens after it’s molded, colored, and assembled into a finished bottle — colorants and processing can introduce their own migration risks.
One SKU’s certificate doesn’t cover the next one. A slightly redesigned lid, a new silicone spout, or a colorway change can be enough to require retesting, even from the same factory.
What Happens When It’s Skipped
For most food contact categories, a compliance gap means a shipment delay. For baby feeding products, the consequences run further than customs:
- Marketplace enforcement is stricter. Amazon.sa and Noon treat baby feeding items as a sensitive category and are quicker to delist or suspend listings flagged for missing safety documentation than they are for general kitchenware.
- Customer trust is fragile and public. A single review mentioning “no certification” or “smells like chemicals” on a baby bottle listing does far more reputational damage than the same complaint on a mixing bowl.
- SFDA/SASO scrutiny is standing, not occasional. Because these are food contact articles aimed at infants, this is exactly the kind of product category where conformity documentation gets requested rather than assumed.
Building Compliance In From the Sourcing Stage
- Request the migration test report before committing to a supplier, not after the first container ships — ask specifically for migration results, not just a material declaration.
- Test the finished, assembled product, including colorants, printed markings, and silicone components — not just the base resin or raw silicone.
- Retest on any material, color, or component change, even minor ones, rather than assuming an existing report still applies.
- Keep the technical file per SKU, so it’s ready if a marketplace or customs authority requests it — not something scrambled together after a listing gets flagged.
The Bait Farasha Approach
Feeding products are one of the categories we’re most conservative about, precisely because the margin for error is a baby’s mouth, not a kitchen counter. We verify migration test reports and finished-product conformity documentation before a supplier is approved for this category — not as a box-ticking step, but because a “BPA-free” claim without a report behind it isn’t a fact yet; it’s a hope.
